For many people, arranged marriages are part of everyday life in Scotland. But forced marriage is different and involves coercion. New legislation makes it a crime to force someone to marry against their will. Because we all have the right to choose who to build a life with.
Forcing someone into marriage is now a criminal offence. The new legislation has been introduced in Scotland to provide greater protection for anyone at risk of forced marriage.
It adds to the civil protection that a Forced Marriage Protection Order (FMPO) can already provide. You can apply for an FMPO to prevent anyone from forcing you to marry against your will.
